Threshold selection controls which pixels become foreground. Too little contrast loses broken lines; too much contrast creates isolated islands and rough corners. For production, optimize for the cut result rather than the most visually complete trace preview.
Prepare one predictable source crop
Remove unrelated page furniture and normalize obvious exposure problems before comparing thresholds. Keep the source crop identical while testing settings so changes in the trace can be attributed to the threshold rather than to preprocessing.
Verify
- Use a fixed pixel size for the test.
- Keep color, contrast, and crop unchanged.
- Include both thin details and open regions in the sample.
Run a small threshold sweep
Trace the same source at several low, middle, and high threshold values. Compare continuity of thin lines, separation between close shapes, and the number of tiny background fragments. Record the setting that produces the fewest defects rather than the one with the darkest preview.
Verify
- Save each candidate beside its threshold value.
- Count tiny isolated paths.
- Overlay all candidates on the same reference image.
Clean geometry without erasing detail
Remove isolated specks and close microscopic gaps first. Then inspect corners and curves at high zoom. Aggressive simplification can turn a readable symbol into a smooth but inaccurate outline, especially where two lines nearly touch.
Verify
- Set a minimum component size appropriate to the material and laser spot.
- Close gaps that would otherwise pause or duplicate the cut.
- Preserve counters in letters and small internal shapes.
Validate with a cheap test cut
Cut or engrave a small representative area using the same material and focus as the final job. Check whether lines separate, corners overburn, or paths cross. The threshold may need adjustment because optical preview contrast does not model heat and kerf.
Verify
- Use a scrap piece with similar thickness.
- Mark the candidate threshold on the test.
- Change only one setting in the next iteration.
Common failure modes
- Do not choose the threshold by preview darkness alone.
- Do not remove small islands before checking whether they are legitimate counters or marks.
- Do not assume a successful screen trace will produce clean geometry at the material scale.
